Waves of Light

This original papercut was designed to honor a principal for 25 years of service to her school. In the center, there is a path representing her guidance as she leads the way for many Jewish educators. Within this path is the verse "V'hayu einecha ro'ot et morecha" - Your eyes shall see your teacher (Isaiah 30:20). This "seeing" is represented through reflection and light. The Torah is compared to light. Here, there are five verses from the Torah relating to light held within five rays of sunlight:
"Chachmat adam ta'ir panav" - a person’s wisdom makes his face shine (Kohelet 8:1). "Lehithalech lifne Hashem b’or hachayim" - that I may walk before God in the light of the living (Tehilim 56:14). "Ki ner mitzvah v'torah or" - "B’orcha nireh or"- in your light we see light (Tehilim 36:10). "Lechu v'nelcha b'or Hashem" - come let us walk in the light of God (Isaiah 2:5). Five multiplied by five - yields twenty-five years of light that the recipient has shone upon the school.

These five rays of light are reflected in the branches of the tree and waves of the water below the path- as the Torah is also compared to a tree and to water. In the branches of the tree is the verse "Etz chayim hi lemachazikim bah, vetomcheha me'ushar" - It is a tree of life for those who hold onto it and all of its supporters are happy (Mishle 3:18). This tree has three main branches - one for each of the recipient's three children. Each of her children has four children symbolized by the four waves flowing to the tree. "Ve'haya k'etz shatul al palgei mayim" - He shall be like a tree planted by streams of water, that brings forth its fruit in the season; its leaf also shall not wither; and in whatever he does he shall prosper (Tehilim 1:3). The water holds a final verse "K'mayim hapanim lapanim, ken lev adam l'adam" (Mishle 27:19). Just as one's face reflects its image when looking into water, so too the heart of one person is reflected in another.
